A Fond Farewell

Wall Contrast.JPGHey guys. It's us, Footnote.

It's been awhile! Sorry about that. Please don't take our silence as a sign of laziness or, worse, apathy. We've been really busy, actually. Making programs, yes, but also fighting for our lives.

Let's explain. We're a non-profit television show, which means that our existence is funded by private donors - not networks or advertisers. We do that because we want to make sure we're in control of the content - these stories are important to us and we don't want to clip around the things that matter most to keep strangers happy. It's a hard way to make a television show, but to make the sort of show we want to make, there's just no other way.

But that donor base has sort of dried up. And for that, and a few other reasons, we're going to say good-bye now.

We're so sad to end it, but it's really for the best. It was a genuine honor to make a season of Footnote, and to tell the stories we got to tell. Not many people get that experience, and we're grateful to every last person who was involved in the process, from our producers to our fans. Especially our fans. And, if we leave now, we can preserve everything that was beautiful and good about Footnote and let it be what it is: a collection of small, important stories that told us all more about who we really are. No jumping the shark. No shortcuts. Just one season of stories that we're very proud of, and that we hope and trust you all enjoyed.

Thanks for going on the journey with us. It's impossible to say how much every tweet, email, phone call, letter and comment meant to us. We were giddy out of our minds that anyone at all cared about what we did. We hope these stories continue to be shown and told - we'll leave them up on our website, FNTV.com, as long as we possibly can.

Our stories count. All of them. It's hard to even know when you're living a story sometimes, but we all are. Our story, the Footnote story, is done - but we're just making way for other ones. New ones. Better ones. For us. For you. For everyone who believes that the little things matter so, so much - and everyone who knows enough to look into the cracks, under the leaves, into dusty chests, old stacks of boxes, and deep into your own heart. That's where you'll find what we found. That's where you'll find the footnotes.

See you round.
